The gateway to the Costa Blanca, Alicante has become one of the most popular destinations in Spain. Attracting people from all over Europe both to the many resort towns along the beautiful coastline, and also those wanting to visit the city itself, Alicante has plenty of charm and is a city that is as exciting as it can be relaxing.
The main attractions in Alicante itself include the Santa Barbara Castle, the Santa Faz monastery, and the Museum of Modern Art, as well as some excellent beaches, and great nightlife.
Head north from Alicante, and you arrive into the most popular areas of the Costa Blanca, the resort of Benidorm. Here sky-scraping blocks of apartments and hotels face the sea over a crowded promenade, and the beaches are filled with sun seekers wanting to top up their tans in the hot weather.
Benidorm has little in the way of culture to get in the way of your enjoyment of a beach holiday, and just about all the traditional Spanish lifestyle has been wrung out of the city to make way for water parks, fair grounds, and English style pubs.
If you are looking for a more authentic slice of Spanish culture, then head for the beautiful town of Altea, where instead of vast resort hotels, you can stay in locally owned guesthouses, and instead of eating egg and chips in a beach café, you can relax with Tapas in a traditional tavern.
