Firmly established as one of the top city break destinations in Europe, Barcelona has become the de facto capital of Catalonia, and a major cultural force in Europe, famed for music, architecture and art.

It was the 1992 Summer Olympics that places Barcelona firmly on the map as a major world city, and since the huge redevelopments were completed, tourism has exploded in the city.

From the famous Ramblas streets, where the majority of Barcelona's nightlife and quirkier shopping centres are located, to the other end of the scale in Antonio Gaudi's stunning La Sagradia Familia Basilica, Barcelona is filled with iconic, world-renowned attractions.

While the city itself has excellent beaches to relax on during the day, there are also resorts nearby in the shape of Loret del Mar and Girona, where there are many beach hotels and facilities to keep you entertained.

Other attractions in the Barcelona area include Montserrat, the mountain village that is incomparably beautiful, and the upmarket resort town of Sitges - one of the top beach destinations in the world.

Major tourist areas in Barcelona include the aforementioned La Ramblas, Plaza di Catalunya, the Nou Camp Stadium where Barcelona FC play their home matches, the coastal region of small restaurants and cafes in Barceloneta, and no visitor to the city should miss out on the chance to see the Gothic Quarter with its many bars and the best of the nightlife on Placa Real.
