Cordóba was at one time the most important city in the western part of the Islamic empire, and when you wander through the winding streets of the city today, it is easy to lose yourself in its Moorish past. The city is still renowned as a centre of Muslim culture especially for the exquisite architecture from the period that remains. Sadly, the most impressive building - The Great Mosque was utterly butchered by builders with more enthusiasm than talent when they converted it into a Roman Catholic Cathedral. The Mezquita as it is called is still a major tourist draw, and attracts hundreds of visitors each day.
The Jewish quarter of Cordoba, La Judería is made up of a maze of narrow winding streets, and flower filled squares like Plaza del Potro. The Jewish Synagogue, is an ancient buildings, one of only three such places of worship in all of Spain has been converted into a museum, and can be found in the centre of the Jewish quarter.
There are a number of excellent parks to explore on sunny days, including the main city park - the Paseo de la Victoria which is especially popular at the weekend.
The typically Moorish Alcazar Gardens are superb to wander through and have a number of ponds, fountains and aromatic plants all laid out elegantly in characteristic Islamic Mathematical style.
South of Cordoba, you can drive your hire car through some beautiful rugged scenery scattered with tiny villages and towns as well as a large National Park where you can see some of the unique wildlife of the region.
