The largest of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria is a unique island often described as being a miniature continent on account of how it manages to combine different climates and landscapes across its compact landmass.
The main tourist area in the south of Gran Canaria is known as Masplomas, and it is here that you can experience beautiful beaches, stunning weather, and even take the opportunity to get out into the desert on a guided tour. Masplomas has a profusion of hotels along the coast, and a couple of main resort centres - notably Playa del Ingles, where the majority of hotels and shops can be found.
The city of Las Palmas, largest town in the Canary Islands, and something of a cultural centre encompasses much of the northern area of Gran Canaria. Aside from the impressive cathedral that took about 350 years to build, the main attractions of Las Palmas include the Museo Diocesano, where you can get to grips with the history of the island.
Off the beaten track, you can get into the rugged volcanic countryside of Gran Canaria, where attractions include the stunning views of mountains, and even a small rain forest where the sound of animals can be heard in the dense canopy of trees.
