An important cultural centre in the Andalusia region of southern Spain, Jerez de la Frontera is especially well known as the home of flamenco, but is also the centre of an important horse breeding region, and wine making area, not to mention being the birthplace of the popular lady's drink, Sherry.
The main attractions around Jerez include the Arab influenced fortress, the cathedral, the Andalusian Flamenco Centre and also the famous Royal Andalusian School of the Equestrian Art where you can see the same Lipizzaner horses that they have in Vienna performing. The old city of Jerez is extremely popular, especially in the evening, when the majority of the nightlife unfolds there, but interesting attractions include the 13th century Convent of San Francisco.
There are dozens of gorgeous little restaurants and bars around the old city, and the local cuisine is something that no visitor should miss out on sampling during their stay. Particular favourites are meat and fish recipes cooked in sherry.
As far as excursions outside Jerez de la Frontera go, the top attractions locally are the many Pueblos Blanco - the white villages to the southeast of the city, and the beach resorts such as Cadiz along the beautiful Costa de la Luz to the southwest of Jerez de la Frontera.
