The smallest of the main Balearic Islands, Minorca's charms are different from those of its neighbours Mallorca and Ibiza. Despite the beauty of the island, its rugged countryside and picturesque coastline, Menorca has never sought the same kind of international reputation as its neighbours, and consequently lacks their popularity in the travel market.

For some, the lack of commercial tourism facilities on Menorca is a problem, while for others, the chance to experience a more traditional holiday on the island than one would on Mallorca is a real boon, and the main reason for visiting.

On Menorca, the local heritage is important, and the past is clung to in the many small villages that litter the countryside. Indeed, you are more likely to see a fishing boat in a harbour than a pleasure cruiser, and water parks are all but unheard of.

That is not to say that there is nothing to do on Menorca. For sure there is not so much as you might find on its neighbours, but there are plenty of things to do. The beaches are quieter than elsewhere, and the weather is excellent. The comparatively unspoilt countryside is perfect for walking in, and the little villages are on the whole, friendly places where the locals are more than happy to give you the time of day. Menorca provides a different holiday to the other Balearics, but one that is in some ways much more rewarding.
