Situated inland from the seaside resorts of the Costa Blanca, Murcia is the regional capital, an elegant and modern city boasting excellent shopping and a number of interesting places to visit. Amongst the attractions in the university town of Murcia, you can see plenty of historic monuments and museums, not to mention checking out the great nightlife that comes courtesy of the town's sizeable student population.

Dominating both the skyline and the spiritual life of the city, the Cathedral de Santa Maria is the main attraction in Murcia. It was constructed from 1394 on the site of an old mosque. The building that you can see today was constructed following a 1735 flood. From the top of the baroque tower, you can take in stunning views over the city, and on a clear day, you might be able to see the sea.

Murcia is well known for its excellent shopping in comparison to other towns nearby, and among the many shopping plazas such as the Corte Inglés, you can find many small, eccentric boutiques selling locally produced art and handicrafts.

When the hustle and bustle of the city gets to be too much for you, there is a lovely park called the Glorieta de España, which is on the banks of the River Segura close to the cathedral. It is the perfect place to soak up the sun in between shopping and sightseeing.
