Often described as being one of the most glamorous cities in Spain, San Sebastian lies in the Basque region of Northern Spain. San Sebastian's location is absolutely stunning, separating the sea and the rolling countryside. San Sebastian is a popular destination for the well-heeled elite from major Spanish cities, and as such, is a great place to go for upmarket shopping, nightclubs, and of course, beautiful people.
The main tourist area is the Parte Vieja - the old quarter of the city where it is easy to lose yourself in the maze of winding streets. The old town of San Sebastian is where you find the majority of the nightlife in the city.
There are three main beaches to choose from: Playa de la Concha, Ondaretta and the Playa de Gros, and most people agree that Playa de la Concha is the most beautiful of them, with a long strand of golden sand at the base of Mount Igeldo - the peak that dominates the city.
Away from the upmarket bars and beautiful beaches, the Basque countryside is one of the main reasons for visiting San Sebastian and its surrounding area, and by taking your hire car into the countryside, there are some really pleasant laid back villages to explore, in particular the hill town of Pamplona that is famous for the annual bull running festival, and was featured in the novel "Fiesta" by Ernest Hemingway.
