In terms of its history, you could argue that Valladolid has passed its peak, and has been in decline for 300 years. Once a Spanish royal city, and twice capital, the Valladolid cultural centre was the home of philosophers and saints, Valladolid is now just another industrial city in central Spain - albeit one that has plenty of character.

About 125 miles away from Madrid, Valladolid is a pretty city with many great buildings including the famous unfinished cathedral and the famous Plaza Mayor - the large central square that became the blueprint for those in all other Spanish controlled cities around the world during the period of empire building.

Valladolid's location away from the rest of the country is compounded by the differences in the local dialect from that which you might hear in Madrid or the south, and it can be difficult to understand the locals even for Spanish Speakers.

The best time to visit Valladolid is during the spring or the autumn, as the city gets unbearably hot in the summer, and feels as cold as Norway in the winter due to the altitude of its location.

Valladolid is surrounded by wide-open spaces, and there is not a great deal to see nearby, apart from traditional Spanish life taking place as it always has in small villages.
