One of the largest cities in the Galicia area of northwest Spain, Vigo boasts many great tourist attractions and is situated in some of the best countryside in the country. Lying on the rugged Atlantic Coast, Vigo lies just 25 kilometres from the Portuguese border, and the cultural influences of Spain's neighbour can be easily seen in the architecture and personality of this part of Galicia.
Vigo itself is home to about three hundred thousand people, and has many interesting attractions to occupy you during your stay, including some of the best-preserved gothic buildings in Europe, and more classical ruins than you can shake a stick at.
The area boasts some of the driest and most pleasant weather in the northwest of Spain, especially during the summer, when the many forty or so beaches along the coast become the ideal place to sit out and get some sun bathing done.
Among the main attractions to be experienced in Vigo, the coastal scenery is perhaps the most important for the majority of visitors. The rugged coastline has some incredible rock formations carved by the power of the Atlantic Ocean, and there is some great surfing on the longer beaches.
If you drive south from Vigo, you can visit Porto, the beautiful former capital of Portugal with its many museums and galleries, and reputation as the cultural centre of the country.
